We all know that bananas are a delicious and nutritious on-the-go snack. But people put banana peels on their teeth in an attempt to get whiter teeth. Does this trick actually work? Continue reading to find out if this potassium-rich fruit helps whiten your teeth.

What is banana peel teeth whitening?

Some of the influencers and articles claim that a banana’s rich mineral content makes its peel good for teeth whitening. Online rumours claim that if you rub the inside of a banana peel on your teeth for a short period of time before or after brushing, your teeth will get whiter in a matter of weeks. However, there is not any scientific evidence for such. But bananas are still a fantastic choice for a snack. They are low in acid and naturally sweet. It has potassium, which improves bone mineral density. Along with magnesium, it also helps to keep the blood from becoming overly acidic, which can cause calcium to be lost from your bones and teeth.

Does banana peel whiten your teeth?

Teeth whitening is the procedure of bleaching your teeth to make them look brighter and pearly white. The colour of stained or yellow teeth can be lightened by a combination of abrasion (brushing) and chemicals. However, banana peel doesn’t contain any natural compounds that are potent enough to whiten teeth, and it hasn’t been proven that rubbing or abrading the peel on the teeth will remove inherent stains.

The American Dental Association (ADA) isn’t admitting that banana peels can be used to whiten teeth, but they’re also not claiming that they are.

Additionally, you can find a number of tricks online for whitening your teeth with other fruits, such as strawberries, oranges, and lemon peels.  This is an unwise decision because the acid in these fruits might harm your teeth. Avoid directly applying anything acidic to your teeth. Even consuming acidic beverages like soda, lemonade, and orange juice might be dangerous.

Alternative for teeth whitening

According to the Times of India, brushing the teeth at least twice a day, in the morning and before going to bed, is the first essential step for pearly white teeth.

  • Brushing in the morning helps remove plaque and bacteria that have accumulated. It is crucial to brush your teeth at night because saliva dries up as you sleep.
  • Brushing your teeth with whitening toothpaste will help you get whiter teeth.
  • You can use whitening gels, and whitening strips are available over the counter.
  • Using a whitening pen may be a good option to whiten your teeth.
  • You can achieve whiter, brighter teeth faster by professional teeth whitening treatment than at-home treatments. In contrast to at-home alternatives, dentists have full control over every chemical used in your mouth during professional teeth whitening in-office.

Each method has benefits and drawbacks, so it’s ideal to talk about them with your dentist to choose which is best for you.

Bottom line

Finally, the idea of using banana peels will whiten your teeth is unreliable. So include bananas in your diet, throw away the peel, and talk to your dentist about teeth whitening.
