Our Lakshme Dental Hospital’s dental experts have brought back beautiful smiles in people of different age groups. To accommodate the patients’ unique needs, we strive to make a tailored treatment plan for each patient.

This post is about one of those smile rehabilitation treatments we provided for an older woman.

Few months ago, a woman aged late 60s visited our clinic. She revealed that she had received a dental cap for an upper tooth from another dentist years before and added that she found some dark spots in the crowned teeth which ruined her smile design. Moreover, she had pain in the crowned tooth then. Due to this, she faced difficulties in eating as well.

She sought our help to get rid of it. When we evaluated the defective tooth, we found that the problematic tooth was mounted with a metal-ceramic crown. It was fractured, revealing the metal parts underneath. Moreover, we found that the teeth in her lower jaw had lost their bone support.

Besides repairing the crowned tooth, the patient was in need of full-arch rehabilitation in her lower jaw to completely get rid of the oral complications she was facing.

We began the treatment with pre-surgical assessments like thorough evaluation of the gum health using x-rays to fix implants. Despite the patient’s advanced age, additional procedures like bone grafting were not required because her jaw bone was healthy. We planned to go for All-on-4 dental implants.

Later, we did a virtual surgery planning using mock surgery protocols to streamline the procedures. As mock surgery mimics the planned dental procedures, it helps dentists to ensure the teeth fit together perfectly. When the virtual setup of how the teeth would appear after the implantation was shown to the patient, she was pleased and gave her consent.

Implanting artificial teeth was started with removing loose teeth in the lower jaw followed by inserting titanium posts in the jaw bone. A provisional denture was fixed the following day.

Generally, the implanted posts take months to integrate with the jawbone. The artificial teeth can only be positioned after that. The duration varies for each patient depending on their condition, which is called healing period. The patient underwent 2 month healing period.

Until then, she enjoyed eating her favorite dishes with no trouble thanks to the denture teeth. This immediate prosthesis restored her flashing smile as well during the stabilization period.

After healing, the implant posts were well-stabilized. It allowed us to place a fixed dental prosthetic device over the implants. Meanwhile, we removed the damaged crown in the upper jaw and replaced it with a new zirconia crown.

The elderly woman is very happy as our dentists have put an end to the dental troubles she encountered, and her smile aesthetics was resurrected as well after years.
